I Thought I Could Follow

In my innocence and naiveté
I thought I could follow
your flashing footsteps
over oceans and past moons.

I had many loves before
and a heart strong with trials
so when your face appeared
I was sure I could follow.

But you turned out to be a god
and your standard of faith so high.
Watching from the shore of eternity
I knew I could not follow.

Still, I am alive in your sea;
your love swims in my heart.
What can I do but want you.
What can I do but follow.

JOHN WOLF

It is too easy to forget the importance of nature to our spiritual nourishment, to forget our commitment to serve all living things—not just other human beings. However, as this issue of SUFI attests, there are remarkable people whose connection to nature translates to active engagement, who seek to adapt to nature’s creative ebb and flow, and for whom service to all of creation is at the heart of spiritual practice.

I wanted to be a nun like the nuns I could not see at the cloistered Carmelite monastery near where I grew up. Every October my grandmother took me there to participate in the “Shower of Roses.”
